The Ksar is located on a mountain peak overlooking the village, at a height of about 150 meters.
The site is very old, dating back to the 12th century AD (590 AH).
The Ksar contains an unspecified number (due to the deteriorating state of the site) of rooms, mainly spread over two floors. Herbert Pope and Abdelfattah Kassah (of the Bayreuth Natural Sciences Society) give a possible estimate of more than 200 rooms at its peak.
On 10 January 2020, the Tunisian government proposed to UNESCO that the site be classified as a World Heritage Site.
