QASR El-BouzIri

Ksar El Bouziri is one of the desert palaces located in Tataouine governorate
the site


Qasr El Bouziri, which is classified as one of the “ancient Berber villages of Piton,” is located at the foot of a peak in a defensive position and can barely be seen from afar. It includes two tanks and an oil mill Cave dwellings, oil factories and a cemetery are located nearby


History of the palace


The site is very old and its foundation dates back to the 18th century


On January 10, 2020, the Tunisian government proposed the site for future classification on the UNESCO World Heritage List2. On January 21, 2021, a decree was issued making it a listed monument


Initialization


It consists of two parts: an old oval part (35 meters in diameter) and an annex in the form of a corridor between the covered entrance (the shed) and an abandoned mosque


The palace includes about 130 rooms, of which 59 are in the extension and 32 are collapsed, and what remains is distributed mainly over two floors in the old part, one floor in the extension, and three floors in a few rare cases

This site was the subject of restoration as part of a collaboration between the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation [AECID] and UNDP Tunisia, as well as the Ksours Om Ettamer [Medenine] and Awaled Mehdi [ Beni Khdech]. The goal is to create a tourist route between municipalities, promoting intercommunity and economic development
